"Congress shall have power to coin money, and regulate the value thereof."
- The Constitution of the United States of America Explanatory note: This website was designed, written, and launched in 2000, the year that the Sacagawea Golden Dollar was released to the public. The site has not been updated since that time. It does not mention the new Presidential Dollar Coin program, nor the new Native American Dollar Coin designs. It is a snapshot into history. With thanks toReleased on January 26, 2000, the GOLDEN DOLLAR has been a run-away hit. The Federal Reserve Banks are barely able to keep up with demand for the coin and many banks are back-ordered. The U.S. Mint has increased production to 5 million a day and hopes that by mid-March, the dollar coin will be more widely available.
Contrary to what some local banks are claiming, banks are able to order the new GOLDEN DOLLAR directly from the Federal Reserve and/or directly from the U.S. Mint. If you would like your bank to order some for you and they claim that they can't, ask them to call 1-877-DLR-COIN (1-877-357-2646) for more information. The GOLDEN DOLLAR replaces the Susan B. Anthony dollar. The two coins are completely compatible in vending machines and any machine that accepts one of them will accept the other.
